Sella Ronda Trip Day 1: Arrival & Snowboarding the Marmolada and Arabba

The Sella Ronda is one of the most iconic ski circuits in the world, offering an unforgettable experience through the heart of the Dolomites.

Here’s how it all unfolded.

The Sella Ronda. Just the name conjures images of breathtaking peaks, endless slopes, and the thrill of carving through pristine snow. It’s a legendary ski circuit, a must-do for any serious skier or snowboarder. My adventure began early, leaving my home in Slovenia with the promise of an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Dolomites.

The drive itself was a scenic prelude. Winding roads snaked through snow-covered valleys, offering glimpses of the majestic mountains that awaited. After several hours, I arrived at Malga Ciapela, my basecamp for the week. My hotel nestled at the foot of the “Queen of the Dolomites,” the Marmolada, its imposing peak dominating the skyline.

The Marmolada Gondola & Breathtaking Views

Eager to hit the slopes, I wasted no time. Gear in hand, I boarded the Marmolada cable car, ready for the ascent. The journey to Punta Rocca (3,265m) is an experience in itself. The gondola climbs in stages, offering increasingly dramatic views of the icy landscape and the towering peaks surrounding it. The two stops along the way only heightened the anticipation. Perfect weather blessed my ascent: clear blue skies, brilliant sunshine, and exceptional visibility. Reaching the summit, I was greeted by a panorama that took my breath away. The Dolomites unfolded in all directions, a tapestry of snow-covered ridges, deep valleys, and jagged peaks. The crisp mountain air and the sheer scale of the landscape created an almost surreal atmosphere.

Descending to Arabba

From Punta Rocca, I launched into the legendary descent of the Marmolada. This run is everything it’s cracked up to be: fast, wide open, and with scenery that’s simply stunning. I carved through the pristine snow and the wind was in my face. The Dolomites served as my backdrop. It was an exhilarating experience. As I descended, I linked up with the network of lifts and pistes that connect the Marmolada to the rest of the Sella Ronda circuit, my sights set on Arabba.

The slopes leading to Arabba proved to be a different beast. Steeper and more challenging, they demanded focus and precise turns. The technical nature of the runs, combined with the fast pace, provided an adrenaline-pumping ride. The perfectly groomed snow conditions only added to the thrill.

A Well-Deserved Break at Porta Vescovo

After exploring the slopes of Arabba, a well-deserved break was in order. I ascended to Porta Vescovo, a renowned viewpoint known for its spectacular panoramas and cozy mountain refuges. There, I indulged in a satisfying sandwich and a refreshing beer, soaking in the breathtaking views of the rugged peaks and endless white slopes. It was the perfect way to recharge and appreciate the incredible surroundings.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, I made my way back down towards Malga Ciapela, already anticipating the adventures that lay ahead. The first day had been an incredible exploration of the Marmolada and Arabba, a taste of the magic that the Dolomites have to offer. It was now time to head back to the hotel, check in, and get some rest.

With the first leg of my journey complete, I was filled with excitement for Day 2: the legendary Sella Ronda itself. A complete circuit around the Sella Massif, promising to take me through multiple valleys, showcasing even more breathtaking scenery, and offering endless opportunities to carve through the snow.
